The Bowral Swimming Centre team have highlighted their commitment to sun safety by implementing a number of Cancer Council measures.

And it is the first in NSW to satisfy all criteria.

Each hour, the Cancer Council’s ‘Sun Sound’ is played over speakers to remind everyone to slip, slop, slap, seek and slide.

Council’s pools and facilities supervisor Laura Hill said the Cancer Council contacted the pool to ask if they wanted to be involved with the program.

“We jumped at the opportunity to have the recording play at our centres to help remind our patrons of the need to be sun safe when visiting the faciltiies,” she said.

“Reminding patrons and parents of children to re-apply sunscreen – especially in light of this year’s hotter than usual season – is an importantmessage for everyone to heed.”

Community response to the sun safe measures has been one of appreciation.

“The hourly Sun Sound messages are being well-received, especially by parents of young children,” Ms Hill said.

“We take sun safety protection very seriously and recognisethe importance of reinforcing this vital health and safety message.”

Cancer Council NSW Southern Region community programs coordinator Sally Lewis said she was very pleased the sound continued to be played and that free sunscreen was readily available at the pool.

“This is exactly the level of engagement that Cancer Council NSW encourages pools to be delivering as part of the Sun Sound program,” she said.

“Thishighlights their commitment to sun safety and to helping prevent young people in the community from developing skin cancer.”

The Bowral Swimming Centre has been participating in the program since December 2013.

Council has announced new conditional times for the pool. If the forecast temperature is greater than 35 degrees, the Bowral Swimming Centre will remain open until 7.00pm, granted the pools are not already being utilised by Swim Club or a casual booking. Call 4861 2598 to check times.
